When you’re decorating your home, there is always a list of do this and don’t do that. Here are a few of the biggest home décor no-nos.
No-No Number 1
It’s one thing to collaborate with your husband for design ideas, furniture choices and various other things that will please you both. However, it’s not okay to let a friend come over and tell you what to do, where to do it, when it should be done and exactly how it should look. This is your home, not theirs. You don’t have to decorate to please anyone but you and your family. If your friends don’t like it, tell them ‘tough cookies.’
No-No Number 2
Do not pick out paint first. Let me repeat this: “Do not pick out paint first!” Just don’t do it, it will cause you a large amount of stress in the long run. It’s nearly impossible to decorate a room based on a paint color. If you’re having a hard time not picking out the paint color, then go ahead and grab several different samples – this will give you a larger palette to work from and you’ll have an easier time deciding décor ideas.
No-No Number 3
Don’t put all of your furniture up against the walls. Sure, as Americans we’ve come to love wide, open spaces – but that doesn’t mean our furniture can’t be of use. Your room should flow from piece to piece, so don’t place things all along the wall – it just looks tacky. However, be careful not to place things where you would walk, either. It’s a tricky dilemma.
Tip: Create a scale drawing of the room and the furniture pieces in it. Be sure to measure out each wall, the distances of the windows from the corners as well as their width, and don’t forget the doors. Also, measure all of your furniture. Once you’ve drawn it out and cut out your furniture pieces, you’ll be able to rearrange them repeatedly until you find exactly what works – without all of the heavy lifting and moving.
No-No Number 4
Just because everyone else does neutral colors, doesn’t mean you have to too. In fact, if you love the look and feel of bolder, brighter colors – go for it! Your mom may have painted her home in browns and beiges, that doesn’t mean you have to! Go ahead and paint the walls whatever your heart desires – as long as it matches, of course!
No-No Number 5
Don’t spend all of your budget on the latest trend. In a less than a year, your living room will be “out-of-date.” Unless you have the money (and the time) to redecorate every few months, then it’s probably not a good idea to spend thousands on the latest and greatest. Faux fur furniture might be hot this year, but next year your room might be a laughing stock.
